Shahid Khan

Shahid Khan is a Senior Partner at Kochhar & Co. in the New Delhi office, specialising in Tax Advisory Law. He heads the Firm's Direct Tax practice and is a former Indian Revenue Service officer with nearly 40 years of experience, having served as a Member of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the highest policy and decision-making body for income tax matters in the Government of India.

Shahid advises leading multinational clients, including Fortune Global 500 companies, on cross-border investment and transaction structures, international tax planning, tax treaties, transfer pricing, permanent establishment risks, indirect transfers of Indian assets, GAAR implications, and tax-effective repatriation and exit strategies. He brings deep expertise in advising on structuring foreign investments into India and has contributed to modernising the Indian Income Tax Department and framing critical tax policy. He also represents clients before the Authority of Advance Ruling, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and High Courts.

Shahid holds an LL.B. from Bhopal University (1986), a B.E. from the University of Roorkee (1971), and an M.S. in Fiscal Studies from the University of Bath, UK (1989).

He received the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Public Administration (2009) for developing the Integrated Taxpayer Data Management System and has been recognised as a Recommended Lawyer for Tax by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2020, 2022).
