Shashi Mathews

Shashi Mathews is a Partner with CMS INDUSLAW's Tax practice group, sitting out of both the Delhi and Gurugram offices. His primary practice area is Tax Law, and he has over 15 years of litigation and advisory experience in various tax laws with an emphasis on indirect tax.

He is enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi and is a member of the Delhi High Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association.

He has been instrumental in maintaining a litigation and advisory practice focusing on tax and other fiscal legislations like FEMA, Foreign Trade and Debt Recovery. He has built a profile of handling litigation across a varied set of forums, including the Supreme Court and the High Courts, alongside Tribunals such as the CESTAT, NAA, DRT/DRAT, Adjudicating Authorities and ATFE. He has a large number of reported judgments to his credit both as lead counsel and as briefing counsel.

Apart from litigation, he has also been involved with a variety of advisory assignments, including opinions on credit mechanisms, classification, tax structuring exercises as part of building financial bids, realignment of distribution chains, and the legality of various FTP policies.

He has handled clients across sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, mobile phone manufacturers and distributors, construction, FMCG and pharmaceuticals. Key examples of his work include the battery charger litigation across multiple states, refund-related litigation at the Supreme Court and various High Courts and CESTAT, and anti-profiteering challenges in the Delhi High Court and Bombay High Court.

Legal500 Asia Pacific 2025 recognised him as a "Next Generation Partner" and "Recommended Lawyer" for Tax.

He has previously been associated with Economic Laws Practice, Delhi, and thereafter with PDS Legal, where he last served as a Director and headed the IDT Litigation in Delhi, and closely worked with Ernst & Young LLP India for more than 8 years before joining CMS INDUSLAW.

He holds an LL.B. (Hons.) from Amity Law School, IP University, New Delhi (2009). He is an Advocate in India and has been recognised by asialaw, Asian Legal Business (ALB) and The Legal 500 Asia-Pacific. He speaks English.
