Rahul Matthan

Rahul Matthan is a Partner – Corporate, Technology, Media and Telecom, Policy Advisory, Artificial Intelligence, Intellectual Property at Trilegal and heads the firm’s TMT practice, focusing on Telecommunications Law. He has extensive experience advising on high-value TMT transactions in the country.

He has worked with companies across sectors, from telecom majors to internet and data service providers, offering advice on regulatory matters and operational issues. His expertise spans several sectors in the technology space, including data protection, digital finance, cryptocurrencies, e-commerce, telecom, new media, platform technologies, technology acquisitions and biotech.

Rahul has been involved in a number of policy initiatives in the TMT space, including assisting the government in preparing the country’s privacy law. He has also served on the Kris Gopalakrishnan Committee on Non-Personal Data and the RBI Committee on Household Finance. He is a published author and a regular speaker worldwide on matters relating to emerging technologies and the law.

His representative clients include Facebook, Google, Ola, Amazon, LinkedIn and Xiaomi, whom he has advised on contractual matters, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, data privacy and protection, and business risk assessment.

Rahul now serves on the Board of Trilegal after having served for many years on the firm’s Management Committee. His recognitions include ‘Icon’ for Corporate, Data Privacy & Protection, TMT and M&A by India Business Law Journal (2026), ‘Hall of Fame’ for TMT by Legal 500 (2022–2026), Band 1 by Chambers & Partners Asia-Pacific for TMT (2021–2026), and ‘Elite Practitioner’ for Technology & Telecommunications by Asialaw (2025). He studied at National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, and is admitted to the Bar Council of Karnataka.
