Stephen Mathias

Stephen Mathias is a Senior Partner at Kochhar & Co., head of the Bangalore office, and co-chair of the Firm's Technology Law Practice, specialising in Technology Law. He is a graduate of the National Law School of India University, a British Chevening Scholar, and a solicitor on the rolls of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Stephen has spent most of his career representing many of the world's largest companies on their operations in India, with expertise spanning outsourcing, licensing, telecom, internet and e-commerce, privacy, intellectual property, and digital products. He is particularly renowned for his expertise in the voice over IP arena, including advising large offshore operations on legally compliant telecom configurations, cloud PBX services and unified communications. He also does substantial data privacy work, assisting multinationals in understanding Indian data privacy law implications and leading teams in data theft investigations and corporate fraud investigations by senior management.

Stephen has been recognised as a Band 1 lawyer for TMT by Chambers & Partners (2015–2022) and is in the Hall of Fame for TMT by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific (2021). He has also been listed in India's Top 100 Lawyers by the Forbes India Legal Powerlist and recognised as a Global Leader in Data – Information Technology by Who's Who Legal.
