Jafar Alam

Jafar Alam is a Partner – Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Practice at Trilegal, focusing on Commercial Litigation. His areas of expertise are commercial and regulatory litigation and arbitration.

He has wide experience handling regulatory, infrastructure and commercial matters ranging from tender disputes, natural resource and environmental disputes, EPC disputes and telecom, technology and electricity disputes before various fora, including the Supreme Court of India, High Courts and various tribunals. He regularly argues regulatory disputes of various hues, including electricity, telecom, competition and national stock exchange (NSE) disputes.

He also regularly handles arbitrations — ad hoc and institutional — and has appeared before various courts in arbitration-related proceedings including urgent interim relief, award challenges, arbitrator challenges and enforcement proceedings.

His representative clients include Brookfield, Macquarie, Actis, National Stock Exchange, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, Sterlite, Statkraft, Enel, Engie, Airtel and Syniverse.

Jafar is ranked as a ‘Leading Lawyer Notable Practitioner’ in Dispute Resolution by Legal Era (2025), a ‘Distinguished Practitioner’ and ‘Notable Practitioner’ for Dispute Resolution by Asialaw (2025, 2024), and a ‘Litigation Star’ for Government & Regulatory by Benchmark Litigation (2024–2025). He studied at St. Stephen’s College and the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, and holds a Master’s degree in Regulatory Law and Economics from the University of Chicago Law School.
