Rajat Jariwal

Rajat Jariwal is a Partner – Dispute Resolution and Arbitration Practice, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Environment and Climate Change at Trilegal, focusing on Environmental Law. He is part of the firm’s environment and climate change practice and has been practising for the past 17 years before different tribunals and courts, including the National Green Tribunal, various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.

A substantial part of Rajat’s practice involves complex, high-stakes environmental law disputes, typically arising out of default in regulatory compliances and allegations of environmental pollution. He has successfully defended corporates against the imposition of million-dollar environmental penalties and also advises on environmentally sensitive M&A transactions.

Environmental law matters are often intertwined with constitutional and commercial issues, and his experience in both areas adds value in advising clients. He regularly advises on disputes arising out of commercial contracts, including PE investments and joint ventures, and has represented clients in domestic and international arbitrations (both ad-hoc and institutional), including those governed by the LCIA, ICC and SIAC.

His representative matters include acting for a major chemical manufacturer before the Supreme Court of India in an unprecedented case concerning transportation of hazardous chemical wastes; for an association of major steel manufacturers in a public interest litigation involving illegal and unregulated mining; for a leading e-commerce company before the National Green Tribunal on single-use plastic packaging; and for a limestone mining major on compliance with Indian forest laws. He has also advised a global supplier of engineered systems on environmental risk management in an environmentally-sensitive business acquisition and a specialty chemical MNC on hazardous waste laws, including the export of hazardous waste from India.

His recognitions include ‘Litigation Star’ – Commercial and Transactions by Benchmark Litigation Asia Pacific (2026), ranking in ‘Leading Lawyers Champions Star Practitioners’ in Dispute Resolution by Legal Era (2025–26), and the Forbes India Legal Powerlist Top 100 Individual Lawyers (2021). He holds an LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, Delhi, and is a member of the Bar Council of Delhi, the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Delhi High Court Bar Association.
