Bijal Chhatrapati

Bijal Chhatrapati is a Partner at JSA, with a practice focused on Dispute Resolution. He has extensive experience handling a wide range of litigation, including corporate and commercial disputes, intellectual property rights, arbitrations, writs under the Constitution of India, and admiralty matters.

He practises before the Gujarat High Court and appears before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts. In the pharmaceutical space, he has handled several litigations pertaining to the Drug Price Control Orders (DPCO) before the Supreme Court of India and various High Courts. He has also handled intellectual property disputes relating to patents, trademarks and copyrights, as well as biosimilars, for several pharmaceutical companies.

His non-litigation and transaction practice covers mergers, acquisitions and takeovers, joint ventures, private equity investments, legal audits and due diligence exercises, conveyancing and real estate transactions, and drafting of commercial agreements. He advised and assisted Safal Constructions Private Limited and its affiliates in connection with a 50:50 joint venture with Phoenix Mills Limited to develop a premium retail development in Ahmedabad under the brand "Palladium Mall."

He successfully led Cadila Healthcare Ltd. in an international arbitration under ICC Singapore Arbitration against a South African entity. He also advised and led negotiations on the then largest merger and acquisition in the Indian pharmaceutical sector when Zydus Cadila acquired a combined 27.72 per cent controlling stake in German Remedies in 2001. He recently advised the Tsingtuo Group / Tsingshan Group in connection with setting up a joint venture through one of their subsidiaries with Indian companies in the steel sector.

Bijal joined JSA in 2015. He was previously a Partner with Singhi & Co. and earlier worked as a sole proprietor of Chhatrapati & Associates. He holds a degree from the University of Bombay (1985) and qualified as a Solicitor with The Bombay Incorporated Law Society (1988). He is a member of the Bar Council of Gujarat and speaks English, Hindi and Gujarati.
